Built from 1951 until the early 1960s to augment and replace the array of ‘Big Four’ and earlier ‘pre-grouping’ designs inherited from the LMS, LNER, GWR and SR, BR took the best features from several of these types to produce the new steel-bodied design. Such was their success that following withdrawal from BR service, Mk1 coaches have become the mainstay of preservation operations and hundreds of vehicles remain in service today with heritage railways, whilst several still run on the main line in charter formations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eCrowned as Model of the Year when they were first introduced, the Graham Farish Mk1 Coaches continue to provide N scale modellers with a masterpiece in miniature, carrying all the hallmarks of this iconic design. The distinctive profile of the Mk1 coach is captured to a tee and on the roof, the finely moulded ventilators are complemented by separately fitted metal handrails and, where appropriate, toilet filler pipes. On the bodysides each door is complete with hinges, handles and even door bumper details, whilst even the sliding window ventilators are discernible. Footboards are present on the solebars below each door whilst the underframe sports a full complement of equipment, with the truss rod frames modelled in all their glory and flanked by battery boxes, vacuum cylinders, dynamo and, where appropriate, other auxiliary equipment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe bogies are fitted with metal wheelsets, whilst the standard N scale coupling is attached via a NEM coupling pocket to the close coupling mechanism that is fitted to the carriage floor, which operates in tandem with the bogie. Non-passenger carrying Mk1s and multiple units based on the Mk1 concept continued in production until 1974.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday, Mk1 coaches are used for charter services on the main line, by the likes of West Coast Railway Company, or on preserved railways such as the Severn Valley Railway, West Somerset, North Yorkshire Moors, East Lancashire and Spa Valley lines, to name but a few.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMk1 coaches were built at many BR workshops as well as by outside contractors including Metro-Cammell, Cravens, and Gloucester RCW.  An extensive range of vehicles was introduced to cover all manner of traffic demands and mixed uses that the railway took in its stride in the 1950s: from buffet counter catering to full restaurant service, First and Second Class accommodation including composite vehicles with some of each, guards’ brake vans and luggage\/ newspapers\/ parcels\/ animal space, sleeping cars, various general merchandise and specialised Post Office vans and niche use vehicles constructed in small numbers such as horse boxes.  These non-passenger vehicles were shorter in length (usually at 57 feet) than the standard 63 feet of their passenger counterparts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe more common types that made up the majority of express and secondary passenger trains include First and Second Class, Composite, Open and Corridor, Suburban (compartment only), Brake, Buffet, Restaurant, and Sleeping cars.
