Announced as part of the Spring 2021 British Railway Announcements, we are pleased to release our charming Branchline model of GWR Modified Hall No. 6990 ‘Witherslack Hall’ decorated in BR Lined Green (Early Emblem) livery and featuring etched nameplates. The tooling for the Branchline Modified Hall has been revised to ensure that the model is more accurate than ever before!

MODIFIED HALL CLASS HISTORY

The Great Western Railway Hall Class is a class of 4-6-0 mixed traffic steam locomotives designed by Charles Collett. In 1924, C.B. Collett modified No. 2925 ‘Saint Martin’, Churchward’s design of the 4-6-0 ‘Saint’ Class. The alterations to No. 2925 included the fitting of 6’ 0” diameter driving wheels, re-alignment of the cylinders and fitting a modern ‘Castle’ Class cab. Further changes took place before the new ‘Hall’ Class began construction. The boiler pitch was modified, and outside steam pipes were fitted. The Hall Class locomotives were numbered 4900-99, 5900-99 and 6900-58. In 1941 Collett’s successor, F.W. Hawksworth, created a modified version known as the Modified Hall Class and it remained in production until 1950. Modified Halls were numbered 6959-6999 and 7900-7929. After Nationalisation in 1948, British Railways gave them the power classification 5MT.

Eleven Halls have survived to preservation.
