The Class 24 was constructed at Derby, Crewe and Darlington works for the 1955 Modernisation Plan and were mainy used for mixed traffic duties. A total of 151 locomotives were constructed between 1958 and 1961. All of these locomotives were withdrawn by the end of 1980.
