The keel laying of the Titanic took place on March 31, 1909 at the Northern Irish shipyard Harland & Wolff. The steamer was equipped with the utmost in elegance and luxury to be used on the prestigious White Star Line transatlantic liner service. Two years later, on 31.05.1911, the Titanic was launched.

With a length of 269.04 m, a width of 28.19 m and a tonnage of 46.329 GRT, it was the largest ship in the world in 1912. Captain Edward John Smith changed specially for the maiden voyage of the sister ship Olympic on the Titanic. On Wednesday, 10.04.1912, she left Southampton. The stations Cherbourg (France) and Queenstown (Ireland) were on their way to New York (USA).

The crossing went smoothly until, due to numerous iceberg warnings on Sunday (14.04.1912) against 23: 40 clock (on-board time) the bell of Ausgucks sounds. The ship grazes the iceberg on the starboard side and sinks into the icy waters of the Atlantic after two hours and forty minutes. Only 712 people survived the disaster.
